20 People to Know in Health Care: Daphne Scott
Daphne Scott, president, outpatient rehabilitation, Confluent Health
Years in current job: 5
What was the biggest adjustment you had to make because of the pandemic? As many, adjusting work to being on video and being mindful to take care of myself through stressful moments in a major upheaval in unknown territory.
What is Louisville’s reputation for health care innovation compared to other cities?
Exceptional. Louisville is fostering an amazing community of health care giants who are putting an emphasis on everything from addressing the aging population all the way to advancing digital health innovations. And, the Louisville Healthcare CEO Council is a perfect example of the many ways Louisville is staking its claim as one of the most innovative health care cities in the United States.
How can Louisville improve health care equity among the underserved? This comes with an intention to do so and to look beyond those who have access already. We need to consider what it is like to not have the resources of money or time, and if we can do that, we will address many of the disparities we see on a daily basis. This is what will drive innovation.
After such a rough two years, how do you combat burnout in the workplace?
One of the most important factors is emphasizing self-care, which health care providers don’t do a great job of in the first place. The pandemic made this vulnerability very real. I don’t know that the point should be to keep talking about burnout. I believe we need to be in the conversation about what self-care looks like, how to do it in a way that gives us our greatest capacities and what that looks like for each individual. Additionally, Confluent Health supports our employees with internal coaches and an emphasis on a culture of 100% responsibility, with the intent of decreasing adrenaline-filled reactions and drama in the workplace.
We’ve invested a great deal of our time, energy and money to make sure this is always top of mind long before the pandemic. Everyone owns the culture, and this is critical, and it is worth companies considering the mental, emotional and physical health of their workforce and making it a priority. I’ve always said, if there isn’t a line on the budget for these things, then question if there should be.
What would you be doing if you weren’t involved in the health care field?
I would still be helping people grow their leadership, becoming mindful and conscious leaders in the world.
What is something surprising about you that people might not know?
Most people don’t know that I am a trained improvisor and performed sketch comedy for many years. Also, I make a mean margarita.
